Quarterback Avery Johnson and the Kansas State Wildcats narrowly defeated the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday in one of the most exciting games of the week. It was a thrilling and back-and-forth game that nearly saw each team win. However, the excellent play of Avery Johnson at the end of the game allowed the Wildcats to pull ahead and win.
Although Johnson was good all night, his best drive came at the end of the fourth quarter when the Wildcats were down 28-24. The Buffaloes had just scored to take the lead and Kansas State got the ball back with three minutes left in the game.
Avery Johnson wasted no time getting the lead back or the Wildcats. After an incomplete pass to start the drive, he threw a 34-yard pass to DJ Giddens. Then on the next play, he threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Brown to secure a 31-28 lead. It was a spectacular series of events and Johnson commented on his heroics after the game.
"This is what football is all about. Man, we wanted to put the game away the drive before. Some things obviously didn't go our way. Ultimately, you have just got to make plays in big moments. Coach Klieman has challenged me and some of our captains and our top players on the team to just make plays in big moments. That's what our guys did tonight."
Teammate and running back Dylan Edwards was asked about Johnson's performance. He said:
"It just shows the killer mentality he has and the winning mentality he has. He's a great player. It shows every single Saturday, and you guys will see it more in the weeks to come."
Although the final scoring drive was spectacular, it did not technically end the game. The defense still needed to get a stop, which it did, ending Colorado's hope of a comeback after four plays.
