Coach Prime led Jackson State to a second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference title in December 2022. The Tigers played against Southern in the championship game, securing a 43-24 victory at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

It was another undefeated conference championship win for Jackson State, marking a significant improvement of the program under Deion Sanders' leadership. However, it would be the coach's final season at the university as the announcement of him taking up the Colorado head coaching job the following season followed soon after.

Following the championship success, Coach Prime's ex-wife Pilar Sanders took to social media to celebrate the win. In an Instagram post, Pilar expressed her excitement at the win with an inspiring message, while praising Shedeur Sanders and the Jackson State team for their success.

“Congratulations for the Back-2-Back Repeat #swacchampionship @gojsutigersfb 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉,” Pilar Sanders wrote. “It’s so important to celebrate and be grateful for every win in life because they all matter regardless of how big or small they may seem.”
“The guys did a great job going #undefeated this entire season so proud of you all! Son! @shedeursanders you did that! 320 yrds passing, 4TD’s and Offensive MVP!!!!! Major proud mom and fam here!”

Coach Prime was absent from the press conference after the SWAC championship win

Deion Sanders was absent from postgame interviews following the SWAC championship in December 2022. According to a SWAC spokesperson, he returned to campus for a meeting with his team amid reports that he was poised to accept the head coaching position at Colorado.

"Coach Prime attempted to enter the interview room," JSU said in a statement. "Southern’s press conference was still in progress. Coach Prime then left the stadium to attend official business with the athletic director and the team."

Sports Illustrated reported that Colorado was on the verge of finalizing a deal with Deion Sanders less than 30 minutes before title game kickoff. It was also said that the university had also scheduled a Board of Regents meeting for Sunday to approve the agreement.

Deion Sanders discussed the decision to take the next step in his coaching career with his players in the locker room. In his three years at the program, he helped transform the team to the most dominant in the SWAC.

“In coaching you get elevated or you get terminated," Sanders told his team in a video posted on Instagram. "Ain't no other way. Either elevated or terminated. There ain't a graveyard for coaches where they die at the place. It don't work like that.
“I have chosen to accept a job elsewhere next year. I’m going to finish what we started. We’re going to dominate. I’m going to be here until that end and that conclusion, and then we’re going to move on.”

Coach Prime reunited with a couple of players at Colorado. These include his two sons, Shilo and Shedeur Sanders as well as Travis Hunter. Boulder marked a new challenge for him as a coach after his tenure in Jackson.
