The Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a defeat to the Tennessee Volunteers last weekend. This is their second defeat of the season and it put their place in the College Football Playoffs in doubt.
This is not a good start for new Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer. He has further made himself a polarising figure with his comments and actions after the defeat.
The Barstool Sports College Football podcast summed up the reactions of many, by saying DeBoer was:
"He is just kind of being a b*tch about it."(6:25)
After the convincing defeat to the Volunteers on Saturday, Kalen DeBoer gave an answer in the press conference that did not leave fans impressed.
When asked what would his message be to the players who have not been used to losing two games this early in the season, DeBoer replied:
"I told them in there, these are the speeches I'm not good at."
Admitting that one does not know how, as a coach, to talk to his team after a loss is something that one rarely sees a coach admitting publicly.
Additionally, DeBoer does a weekly radio show where he answers calls from fans. But this week, he only took one call. This was another moment that made him look circumspect after the loss.
Alabama lacked the "killer instinct"
Also in the press conference after the defeat to the Tennessee Volunteers, DeBoer said that his team does not have a "killer instinct."
“There are times where we have to separate ourselves and have that killer instinct ... Right now, we don’t do that. It is not like they are not trying. … It is just that the execution needs to be better.”
In the last few games, Alabama has struggled. Their two losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee sandwiched a narrow win to the South Carolina Gamecocks, in a game that Alabama were lucky to come away from as victors.
Kalen DeBoer is unlikely to experience the levels of success that was achieved by former coach Nick Saban.
However, he is expected to lead this team to a successful season, where the Crimson Tide is in contention for a spot in the College Football Playoffs and the SEC championship game.
Alabama under DeBoer is currently experiencing a downward spiral. They will want things to improve as soon as possible. A win against the struggling Missouri Tigers this weekend will help.
