The popularity of EA Sports College Football 25 is surreal. Decades ago, an option attack was incredibly common. Nebraska dominated college football with option-based schemes as late as the 1990s, and Georgia Tech still ran the triple option with Paul Johnson into the 2010s.
But now, the option is almost entirely the property of the service academies at the FBS football level. That said, option concepts are also part of the spread option movement, which has taken hold. But here's a quick rundown on option playbooks in College Football 25.
Best option playbook in College Football 25
Here are a few of the likely suspects before we unveil the grand victor of the top option playbook.
Option
So this is not exactly much for novelty or fanciness, but the basic option playbook isn't a bad place to start.
It will allow players to get familiar with option concepts, like the quarterback deciding whether to keep the ball, hand off to a fullback, or pitch to the halfback. Nothing fancy, but it's there if needed.
Navy
Navy, as one of the aforementioned service academies, offers a pretty no-frills option attack. Navy runs its option attack out of the flexbone formation, which doesn't allow for many passing options. The tight end and backs are the top receivers if a pass is needed.
Army
The Black Knights also use the option, but they incorporate some shotgun looks, which helps provide more potential for offensive balance. The Army's attack is almost halfway between the traditional option and the spread option. But more on that later.
Spread Option
The generic spread option, much like the generic option, is a good learning opportunity for people who want an introduction to concepts of the attack.
The spread option is a mixture of the spread passing attack and option running plays. This won't be traditional option as much as QB zone reads, which is essentially the option without the handoff.
But considering the option within the same set of concepts as the spread passing game allows for running and passing possibilities. Try it out here, and then try more of those attacks.
Liberty
The Flames are one team with an interesting spread option attack. With shotgun and pistol looks, everything from downfield passes to QB option pitches are in play. This isn't really pure option football, but it's an easy way to combine both concepts of running and passing looks in one system.
The Best College Football 25 Option Playbook
The best option playbook is Air Force. It's flexbone-based stuff, but has enough passing wrinkles to keep defenses honest. But mostly, it's just a power-running gameplan. It isn't fancy, but it's probably the most effective offensive option on the College Football 25.
