For some weeks now it's been rumored that Bill Belichick could potentially be about to join the North Carolina Tar Heels as their new coach. Belichick has been idle since 2023 when he left the New England Patriots. He coached New England for 24 seasons and led it to become one of the most dominant franchises in the NFL, winning six Super Bowls alongside Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski (four Super Bowls) and Julian Edelman (three Super Bowls).
According to former NFL scout Ollie Connoly, the process is in the last stages with the coach having accepted the position and awaiting the answer of the Tar Heels authorities regarding his conditions. A final decision is expected in the following 24 hours. According to Connoly, Belichick's conditions are as follows:
"Update: Belichick has agreed to become the next UNC coach. Belichick handed the school a 400 page 'organizational bible' with structure, payment plans, staffing choices etc. decisions on whether to commit with UNC. He is expected to know their decision within 24 hours"
The job would be Belichick's first at the collegiate level, with him having only worked in the NFL up to this moment. The position in Chapel Hill opened after the Tar Heels decided to end Mack Brown's second stint at North Carolina before the end of the 2024 regular-season finale against NC State.
Bill Belichick on how he would run North Carolina
Bill Belichick went on the Patt McAfee Show on Monday and opened up about him likely going to North Carolina. He confirmed he was in conversations with UNC chancellor Lee Roberts. When asked by McAfee how he would run his first college program, Belichick said:
"“Let me put this in capital letters: If, I-F, I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL. It would be a professional program, training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques that would transfer to the NFL, it would be an NFL program at a college level and an education that would get the players ready for their career after football, whether that was the end of their college career or at the end of their pro career.
I feel very confident that I have the contacts in the National Football League to pave the way for those players that would have the ability to have the opportunity to compete in the National Football League ... It would be an NFL program, but not at the NFL level,”
In 24 seasons with the Patriots (2000-2023), Belichick won six Super Bowls and had an aggregate record of 333 total wins in the NFL. He also managed the Cleveland Browns between 1991 and 1995. He has a record eight Super Bowls, as he won two during his time as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants between 1985 and 1990.
