On Thursday, a report from Inside Carolina claimed Bill Belichick had interviewed for the vacant coaching job at the University of North Carolina. UNC fired Mack Brown on Nov. 26 and it appears that the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach could return to the touchline after parting ways with the New England Patriots earlier this year.
Since Belichick is in contention to take up a coaching job at the college level, analyst Jason Whitlock believes the former Patriots coach might follow suit after watching Deion Sanders at Colorado.
"I think Bill Belichick has looked at Deion Sanders and said that, 'Hey, Sanders is able to attract players to Colorado, he cuts the cheque, he doesn't go out and do a bunch of recruiting," Whitlock said. "He lets the cheque speak for itself and he can say, hey I know what it takes to make it in the NFL.'
"Maybe Bill Belichick has a sincere interest and I'm sure North Carolina has a lot of money. They can pay Bill Belichick $10-12 million a year."
Sanders was hired as Colorado's coach in Dec. 2022. In his first year, he led the Buffs to a rather underwhelming 4-8 record.
However, this season, Coach Prime's Buffaloes have been one of the most improved teams in the country. Colorado (9-3, 7-2 Big 12) was in contention to qualify for the College Football Playoff until the Buffs suffered a shock defeat against Kansas in Week 13.
Sanders reportedly signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with the Buffs, excluding bonuses.
Bill Belichick reportedly has unique demand ahead of accepting UNC job
Bill Belichick has a unique demand from UNC if he is to accept the coaching job with the program. On Saturday, The Guardian's Ollie Connolly reported that Belichick wants North Carolina to guarantee that his son, Stephen Belichick will be named the school’s head coach in waiting. UNC is reportedly open to Belichick's request.
However, UNC might be pulling off a publicity stunt by interviewing Belichick. Some are finding it hard to believe that the 72-year-old would consider taking up the job at Chapel Hill after winning several major honors in the big league.
Belichick is arguably the greatest to have coached in the NFL. He has eight Super Bowl rings in total, having won two as a defensive coordinator with the New York Giants.
Belichick won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, having served as their head coach from 2000 to 2023. He coached the Cleveland Browns from 1991 to 1995.
Belichick has a 333–178 all-time head coaching record in the NFL.
