Coming into the season, Florida Gators coach Billy Napier was already on the hot seat after a disappointing 2023 season. This season has reinforced his shaky job status, opening the season with a blowout loss to the Miami Hurricanes and a brief respite against the Samford Bulldogs before the 33-20 home loss to the Texas A&M Aggies.
According to ESPN, various Gators boosters have already come up with the $26 million that would be required to buy out the embattled coach's contract in a bid to get rid of him.
According to On3's Nick Schultz, Napier addressed the rumors about the speculation around his precarious job security.
"These are all hypothetical scenarios," Billy Napier said. "I think for me, I'm gonna try to model what I would expect from our players and some of those things I just talked about, I think that's the whole key is that as a whole staff and throughout the organization, we have to model what we would expect from the players and want from the players."
Billy Napier responds to Florida fans' booing
Billy Napier does not have a great record against FBS opponents, logging a 9-16 record after the 33-20 home loss to the Texas A&M Aggies at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
Under Napier, the Florida Gators have lost two straight seasons and failed to qualify for bowl games last year. His record versus SEC (Southeastern Conference) opponents is 6-11, and his team has lost seven straight games against Power Four teams, four of which occurred in front of home fans at "The Swamp."
After the game, the under-fire Gators coach was roundly booed by Florida fans at "The Swamp." He addressed the boos during his postgame news conference.
"I don't blame them ..." Napier said. "I mean, ultimately when you play a certain way in this arena, you're going to be criticized. This is one of those places where there's history and tradition and expectations.
"There's been a lot of really good football teams that played in that stadium in the past. When you play ugly ball and maybe it doesn't look quite like we all want it to, then, hey, it comes with the territory. So I probably would've done the same thing, truth be known."
The current season is trending familiarly for Florida and is bound to worsen because the Gators have the most difficult schedule in the FBS.
