The Boise State Broncos had a tremendous season, winning the Mountain West Championship and qualifying for the College Football Playoff. Much of their success was attributed to running back Ashton Jeanty and his near-historic season, but the Broncos will not be able to rely on him next season.
After finishing 27 yards shy of breaking Barry Sanders' single-season rushing record, Jeanty has declared for the 2025 NFL draft.
As a result, the Broncos need to prepare for life without Jeanty. To help with that transition, they have added to their coaching staff. On Thursday, the Broncos hired former Boise State assistant coach Zak Hill as their new quarterbacks coach. He had previously been with the program from 2016 to 2019. Insider Jay Tust wrote on X:
"BREAKING: Former Boise State assistant coach Zak Hill is returning to Boise as the new quarterbacks coach. He orginially joined the program in 2016 as co-offensive coordinator and QB coach, then was promoted to OC in 2017. He served in that roll through 2019, then left for Arizona State.
"With Hill as the OC, the Broncos ranked first or second in the Mountain West in scoring offense all three seasons, and the QBs averaged 29.3 TD passes per season. Hill spent this fall as an offensive assistant with the Seahawks."
Zak Hill returns to Boise State after six seasons away from the team
When Zak Hill was announced as the new quarterbacks coach for the Boise State Broncos, it ended his six-season absence from the team. After serving as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator with the Broncos from 2016 to 2019, he left for Arizona State (2020 to 2021 as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach).
Then for the 2022 season, Hill was hired by the American Leadership Academy Gilbert North as an assistant coach. He only stayed with them for a season before becoming the head coach of Saguaro HS (AZ) in 2023.
In 2024, Hill got his first opportunity to coach in the NFL. He was hired by the Seattle Seahawks as an offensive assistant. However, after one season, he decided to return to Boise State.
The Broncos have a tough task next season attempting to replicate this season's success. Although the team was strong as a whole, much of their success can be attributed to Ashton Jeanty's near-historic season. It will be interesting to see if Zak Hill's presence can help them achieve similar success.
