Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables will make his SEC Media Days 2024 appearance on Day 2 of the event on Tuesday. The Sooners have a big season ahead of them as they make the switch from the Big 12 to the SEC, marking Venables' third season in charge of the team.
There will be a lot of attention on Venables as he makes his first appearance at the SEC Media Days. Here are the top five questions we want the Oklahoma head coach to answer during his time at the event ahead of the 2024 college football season.
Top 5 questions we want Brent Venables to answer at SEC Media Days 2024
#1 How will the offense look under Seth Littrell?
Seth Litrell was promoted from Oklahoma's offensive analyst to offensive coordinator after Jeff Lebby took the head coaching job at Mississippi State during the offseason. Lebby had been the Sooners offensive coordinator since Venables took over as head coach in 2022.
The Sooners' offense ranked fourth in the nation last season, averaging 41.7 points per game and over 500 yards of total offense, finishing with an overall record of 10-3.
Littrell will oversee the offense this season with a new starting quarterback. SEC Media Days 2024 will allow Venables to speak on the decision to promote Littrell and what he thinks Littrell can bring to the Sooners' offense.
#2 How will the new offensive line look this season?
The Sooners lost their entire starting offensive line from 2023 to either the NFL or the transfer portal. They managed to bring in Spencer Brown, Michael Tarquin, Febechi Nwaiwu and Geirean Hatchett from the transfer portal in their attempt to revamp the offensive front.
One of the biggest questions facing Venables and the Sooners in 2024 is whether the offensive line can protect Jackson Arnold and clear running lanes for tailback Gavin Sawchuk.
Luckily for Oklahoma, offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, one of the nation's top position coaches, will return to the team this season. But putting together an offensive line that can hold up with the program's move to the SEC may be Bedenbaugh's toughest task yet.
#3 How will Jackson Arnold perform in the SEC?
Dillon Gabriel led the Oklahoma offense last season at quarterback but will not return in 2024 following his transfer to Oregon. Jackson Arnold will take over as the Sooners' starter this season after appearing in seven games in 2023 and making one start in the Alamo Bowl against Arizona. He finished his first start with 361 yards, two touchdowns and one interception as the Sooners fell to the Wildcats 38-24.
With Arnold beginning his first season as the Sooners full-time starter, many are wondering if he is prepared to lead the team as they transition to the SEC. SEC Media Days 2024 will allow Venables to express the amount of confidence he has in his quarterback ahead of the upcoming season.
#4 Is Oklahoma ready to compete in the SEC?
The move from the Big 12 to the SEC will present Oklahoma with a new batch of challenging conference opponents in 2024. A major topic for Brent Venables during SEC Media Days 2024 will include how competitive his team can be with matchups scheduled against Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama and LSU this season.
The SEC will also be doing away with divisions within the conference this season, which will make the competition for spots in the SEC championship game even more difficult. The Sooners will also face a familiar foe Texas in the Red River Rivalry this season, as the Longhorns are also making the transition from the Big 12 to the SEC.
#5 Which SEC venue is Venables looking forward to visiting the most?
This would be an intriguing question for Venables during SEC Media Days 2024. The conference includes some of the most hostile environments for visiting teams, and Oklahoma is set to visit several of these venues during the regular season.
They will head to Jordan-Hare Stadium to take on Auburn in late September, along with visits to Ole Miss and Missouri. They conclude their regular season with a trip to take on the LSU Tigers in Death Valley. This will be the fourth meeting between the Sooners and the Tigers and the first time they will visit Tiger Stadium in Oklahoma's history.
Which question are you most looking forward to Brent Venables answering during SEC Media Days 2024? Let us know in the comments.
