Brian Kelly saw his LSU team fall to Alabama in Baton Rouge on Saturday night. The Crimson Tide blew their rival 42-13 in the high-stake Week 11 encounter, marking the end of their impressive 15-game winning streak when playing at night at the Tiger Stadium.
The loss has effectively ended LSU’s College Football Playoff hopes. It marks the Tigers' third defeat of the season, after falling to USC and Texas A&M earlier. They were ranked 15th in the inaugural ranking and are expected to drop significantly after the loss.
This has led to widespread criticism and backlash for Kelly. The coach hasn't lived up to expectations in Baton Rouge and the fans are now calling to have him fired.
"Best part about this is Brian Kelly is gone."
Other reactions online:
"Fire Brian Kelly immediately after this game idgaf, he had two weeks to prepare for a mobile QB," a fan wrote.
"Just a ridiculous start from LSU. Fire Brian Kelly. Enough of this shit," another fan wrote.
"Embarrassing. It might be time to fire Brian Kelly," another fan wrote.
No way back for LSU and Brian Kelly
The home defeat on Saturday night marked a disastrous season for LSU and Brian Kelly. The program suffered three losses last season and has already matched that.
The game against Alabama on Saturday had postseason implications. The two teams won't leave the Tiger Stadium without one having its playoff chances jeopardized. Paul Finebaum echoed this during the week in his appearance on “Get Up!”
"This is the biggest game of the year in college football,” Finebaum said. “Not because these are the two best teams, but this is the first playoff eliminator. The loser really has almost no path back. The winner has a chance to figure it out."
“Now, it’s a battle of quarterbacks and I happen to like Jalen Milroe. He’s a dual threat. Nussmeier is an outstanding passer, he can't complete anything like every other quarterback we know. I’d like LSU to go down at home.”
While the loss plunges LSU to misery with Kelly’s job under threat, it marks redemption for Alabama. After losing to Vanderbilt and Tennessee earlier this season, the wins against Missouri and LSU have changed the tides under Kalen DeBoer.
The Crimson Tide are now a strong contender for a playoff spot. It also appears they've overcome the problem they had on the defense after limiting the explosive offenses of both Missouri and LSU.
