Brian Kelly on hot seat: LSU coach under fire following terrible loss to Billy Napier's Florida

The LSU Tigers suffered a suprise defeat to the Florida Gators on Nov. 16, a team that has struggled for most of the season. This defeat is the third consecutive setback for the Tigers, whose playoff dreams are now over.

This loss not only has an impact on the Tigers' season but may be pivotal in the future of coach Brian Kelly, who is definitely on the hot seat.

Kelly came to the Tigers in 2022 from Notre Dame (a program he had a lot of success with) and hoped to return LSU to the top of the SEC and country.

Despite two 10-win seasons and a trip to the SEC championship game in 2022, it seems like the Tigers have hit a wall under Kelly.

This year, the program currently sits at 6-4 for the season and is on a three-game losing streak. While a defeat to Alabama may be understandable, a 27-16 loss to a Florida side that has been below par throughout the season is considered unacceptable.

This defeat and poor run of form in general has only increased calls for the Tigers to fire Kelly. If they were to do this, how much would it cost them?

How much would it cost LSU to get rid of Brian Kelly?

Kelly is currently signed to the Tigers until the 2031 season. His salary was initially $9 million, and this has been rising with every season that Kelly has been with the team.

This year, it is estimated that Kelly will earn $9.7 million, and this includes a $500,000 bonus for leading the Tigers to a bowl game.

If the Tigers were to buy out Kelly's contract and move on from him, it would cost them a lot of money to do so.

Yahoo Sports states Kelly's buyout figure is $61,738,333. This is the second highest number in the SEC behind Georgia Bulldogs' coach Kirby Smart, whose buyout figure is worth over $100 million.

Additionally, if Kelly were to be fired without cause, he would be paid 90% of his remaining salary.

Simply put, getting rid of Kelly now will be a costly choice by the Tigers. While they may not like his performance so far, things may get better for the Tigers if they give Kelly some time.
