BYU Athlete Steve Sarkisian's picture from Cotton Bowl resurfaces on social media

Sports journalist Holly Rowe shared an old picture of herself and Steve Sarkisian on X from their attendance at the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1997. The No. 5 Texas Longhorns coach played quarterback for the BYU Cougars in 1996 and 1997. In the photo, Holly had her son, McKylin Rowe, in her arms as she stood beside the former quarterback in his BYU tracksuit.

Sarkisian led BYU to a close 19-15 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats in the bowl game for his senior year. He completed 21 of 36 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns. His efforts earned him the co-offensive MVP alongside former BYU wide receiver Kevin Lockett.

On the "Call Your Mom" podcast, Rowe discussed the photo and reflected on the Longhorns coach quarterback career.

"Steve is awesome. I am a huge fan of Steve Sarkisian. He was a winning quarterback. One of the best and most successful seasons ever in BYU school history. They went to the Cotton Bowl, and guess where he is coaching the Texas Longhorns this weekend, in the Cotton Bowl," Rowe said (Timestamp: 15:07).

On Friday, Texas (13-2, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) will face the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (12-2, 7-2 Big Ten) in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The Longhorns coach hopes to lead his team to victory and advance to the College Football Playoff national championship on Jan. 20.

During the podcast, Rowe also explained how his quarterback career reflects his coaching career ahead of the upcoming bowl game.

"We actually just had a conference call today with Sark (Steve Sarkisian) today. He goes by Sark, and he said that he coaches like he played, and I think that's really interesting because he was a cocky, confident, poised, commanding quarterback, and that's how he coaches, so I think that's really cool," Rowe said (Timestamp: 15:30).

On Friday, the Longhorns coach held a press conference to discuss the team's upcoming game against the Buckeyes. He noted that his team is the underdog to win the Cotton Bowl.

DraftKings has Ohio State as a -238 favorite to beat Texas. "Sark" asked the Texas fanbase to come to the game and show support to help the team overcome the odds against them.

"We're gonna need our fans. We're gonna need our fans support. I need Longhorn Nation to show out in Arlington. We're gonna need everything we got to try to win this game, you know? Clearly, we are massive underdogs. Nobody's gonna give us a shot, so we're gonna need all that we can to try to win this game," Sarkisian said (Timestamp: 7:36).
