It was an exciting game between BYU and Baylor on Saturday as the Cougars went to secure a win against the odds. BYU maintained its perfect start to the 2024 college football season with the win in Waco, Texas.
The Cougars were the dominant team in the first, scoring a total of 31 points. The Bears returned stronger in the second but it wasn't enough to secure the win on Saturday. Dave Aranda’s team now finds itself on the route of missing out on a bowl game this season.
BYU opened the scoring after Jake Retzlaff located Miles Davis with a 26-yard touchdown pass with 10:52 left in the first quarter. The Cougars extended the lead after Chase Roberts completed a two-yard rushing touchdown with 8:26 left in the first quarter.
As the game proceeded, the Cougars exerted their dominance in the contest after Jake Retzlaff made a 17-yard rush for a touchdown with 3:39 left in the first quarter, taking the score to 21-0.
However, Baylor responded with a 20-yard rushing touchdown from Sawyer Robertson with just three seconds left in the first quarter, creating some anticipation for the rest of the game.
BYU started the second quarter on a strong note and extended the lead with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jake Retzlaff to Darius Lassiter.
Baylor responded with a Sawyer Robertson one-yard touchdown pass to Josh Cameron but a field goal from Will Ferrin took the Cougars further ahead 30 seconds before the first half ended.
The second half of the game had little scoring action compared to the first. Baylor raised the hope of staging a comeback when Sawyer Robertson located Ashytn Hawkins with a 15-yard touchdown pass but another Will Ferrin field goal gave BYU further confidence.
The only score of the fourth quarter came to Baylor as Sawyer Robertson located Josh Cameron again for a 23-yard touchdown pass. The Cougars held on to secure a 34-12 win to maintain a perfect start to the season.
