BYU and SMU have played each other only once in college football history. The Cougars and the Mustangs met in the New Mexico Bowl in December 2022, marking the first and only encounter between the two universities. The Cougars came out victorious.
The game marked the Cougars’ last as a Football Bowl Subdivision independent program, joining the Big 12 the next season. They ended the 2023 season with a 5-7 record, missing out on a bowl game.
