California (6-5, 2-5 ACC) traveled all the way to Texas for a challenging regular-season finale matchup against the SMU (10-1, 7-0 ACC). Both teams have had a different outing in their first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and they looked to make a statement on Saturday.
The Mustangs stand as the only ACC team undefeated in conference play this season. They’ve also already secured their spot in next week’s ACC Championship Game, where they will face either Miami or Clemson. This is a big win for a school that joined from the Group of Five.
The Golden Bears have found their stride late in the season, winning three of their last four games and securing bowl qualification. Despite their recent success, it’s been a challenging year for the program, with all five of their losses coming in tightly contested, one-possession games.
