Colorado star Travis Hunter finally reactivated his Instagram account during the weekend after deactivating it after his Heisman Trophy win due to the controversy surrounding his relationship with his fiancee, Leanna Lenee.
During Tuesday's segment of "The Travis Hunter Show," the NFL-bound star was asked which former Heisman winner he would have liked to play with.
"It would be Cam Newton," Hunter said. "That's my coach. He matured me a little bit more. All the main people that were in my life, Cam Newton came and he took me. People were trying to use me and stuff like that, but he took me and put me on his team. He took care of me."
Hunter was part of Newton's C1N football program during his foundational years.
Cam Newton ended Heisman boycott for Travis Hunter
Ever since he won the Heisman Trophy in 2010, former NFL star Cam Newton has boycotted the annual ceremony due to an incident that occurred during his accolade-winning year.
Mississippi State Bulldogs boosters accused the former Carolina Panthers quarterback's father, Cecil Newton, of asking for sums of between $120,000 and $180,000 for his son's commitment which was illegal at the time. After the story broke, authorities asked Cecil to stay away from the Heisman ceremony, and he did not get to witness his son's big moment.
During a December episode of his "4th and 1" podcast, Cam Newton said his father compelled him to attend the 90th Heisman ceremony, so he went due to Travis Hunter's frontrunner status for the award.
"The only reason I’m going back is because of one of the former players in the C1N program, Travis Hunter," Newton said. "I've been a fan of all the former Heisman winners and finalists. It was just, it was bigger than that. And my dad told me to go. So, I don't give a damn how big and bold—[when] Cecil Newton calls me, I answer.
“And my kids, they got so much excitement. I remember when we went to UCF, they were like, 'Dad, we want to go see Travis.'"
Newton has been unwavering in his support of Hunter throughout his college career which culminated in the two-way star winning the most prestigious individual accolade in college football.
