Colorado coach Deion Sanders led the Buffaloes to a 9-3 regular season record after pummelling the Oklahoma State Cowboys 52-0 in Week 14 of college football action. Despite being tied at the top of the Big 12 standings, the Buffs missed out on the conference championship game due to tiebreakers not going their way.
On Monday during an episode of the "4th & 1" podcast, former NFL star Cam Newton made a statement comparing Sanders, Georgia coach Kirby Smart and the now-retired Nick Saban.
"There's a thing that they call relatability and when Deion Sanders walks into your living room versus Kirby Smart walking into your living room, I can get to the same place and it's the NFL," Newton said. "A lot of the time, coaches are like ministers, you choose your church not because of the message that they're telling you."
Newton then went on to make a huge claim about Sanders' ability to win things vis-a-vis Smart and Saban if he was given the same resources.
"Who's more relatable than Deion Sanders? Especially the economic situation of most players. You give Sanders Alabama's resources at another team and watch what the hell he do. What makes the Kirbys, the Nick Sabans, the Dabos, the Hugh Freezes what makes them have the right to speak to you in the regard that they're speaking to you is because of what they've been able to accomplish as a coach.
"The difference between Prime is that he can look at you and he can give you an honest opinion because he actually did it as a player. You give Deion Sanders half of what Nick Saban got as resources, the mother f**ker has made a bottom-tier program, a must-see TV."
Deion Sanders changed analyst's opinions on his coaching
During preseason, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum called the Buffs "irrelevant" during an episode of "First Take."
After the Buffs beat the UCF Knights 48-21 in Week 5, Finebaum reversed course on the charismatic Colorado coach and has been a fan ever since.
"As someone who has been very critical of Deion, I have to say he has managed this team quite well in spite of all the bullets and all of the attacks and all of the criticisms, some of it coming from me," Finebaum said. "I give him enormous credit ... They're back to being a legitimate story for the first time."
Sanders has been linked with a move to the NFL on the back of his impressive season with the Buffs coinciding with his sons, Shilo and Shedeur Sanders departing for the NFL. However, he is reportedly staying with Colorado and has made some recruiting moves to back that sentiment up.
