South Carolina defensive end Dylan Stewart made waves on Saturday with his celebration after sacking Alabama quarterback Jaxson Dart. It was an emotional and close game as the Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3 Southeastern Conference) narrowly lost to the No. 7-ranked Crimson Tide (5-1, 2-1) 27-25. Had the Gamecocks won, it would have been one of the biggest upsets of the season.
After the sack, Stewart showed a lot of excitement and celebrated unconventionally. He stood up, and with Dart still on the ground, he used his hands to make it look like he was repeatedly shooting him with a gun.
On his "4thand1show" podcast on Tuesday, former NFL MVP quarterback Cam Newton talked about the celebration and made it clear that he does not approve of it.
"My question is this Dylan Stewart," Newton said. "First off, this was as much of a selfish play as I've ever seen, and you're talking to a mother f*cker who has done some selfish sh*t. And you just gotta call a spade a spade, and I'm not being hypocritical here. I'm telling you, Dylan, this is coming from a person whose done some, man f*ck the team, I need to get this celebration off."
"At no point in time, have I ever did anything that implied something that I really want to do in real life. My thing is, you're insinuating something that you would never do."
Newton added that the celebration should not be done anymore.
"We need to go kill that celebration because that ain't cool bro. That don't make you hard or gangster. And this is the thing, you're marketability, shooting someone in the, no bro, let's think about this, Dylan. This is coming from someone who did it at a high level. I never did this."
This is not the first time Cam Newton has made news in the college football world this season as he also trended earlier this month because of his beef with Shedeur Sanders.
Dylan Stewart and South Carolina travel to Oklahoma on Saturday
Dylan Stewart and the South Carolina Gamecocks will have a chance to bounce back from their tough loss to Alabama when they travel to Oklahoma on Saturday. The Gamecocks have lost their last two games, both against ranked opponents in No. 12 Ole Miss and Alabama.
If South Carolina is going to get back in the win column, it needs Dylan Stewart to continue his high level of play. He is the second-leading edge rusher on the team with 12 tackles.
