Cam Rising injury update: CFB insider drops latest news on Utah QB's return

Utah Utes quarterback Cam Rising injured his hand during last weekend's game against the Baylor Bears and missed the second half. In his absence, the Utes held on for a 23-12 victory. The injury was previously described as "not serious," and there was hope he might play against the Utah State Aggies on Saturday.

However, on Thursday, College Football insider Brett McMurphy reported:

"Utah QB Cam Rising "unlikely" to play Saturday at Utah State, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. Rising suffered a finger injury on his throwing hand last week, but nothing is broken & he's expected to return next week vs. Oklahoma State, source said. "

This is not the best-case scenario for Utah, as Cam Rising has been a main piece in the on-field lineup. In the two games he's played he has thrown for 346 yards and scored seven touchdowns, two of which came against Baylor before he was taken out.

Who will replace Cam Rising?

During the game against Baylor, freshman Issac Wilson replaced Rising as quarterback after the latter's injury and went 4-for-9 with 30 yards passing.

However, his performance in Week 1 against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds was more successful, as he threw for 74 yards and scored one touchdown. Wilson will likely be the starter for the upcoming game. He has the backing of Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, who said in the post-game conference:

"I thought he played better last week than he did the previous week. The last game and had more command, had more confidence, looked like he played with more confidence and I think that he came in and held down the fort for us.

“I think he’s going to continue to better. We certainly believe that and we have a lot of confidence in him.”

Wilson's improvement will need to come quickly, or Utah may struggle against their state rivals this weekend.
