On Thursday night, Maryland Terrapins quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. announced he will enter the transfer portal. Edwards Jr. has been the Terrapins' starter for one year and had success.
Edwards Jr. will be one of the top quarterbacks available in the transfer portal. However, CFB insider Pete Nakos of On3 predicted Edwards would land with the Michigan Wolverines.
"Sources tell On3’s Steve Wiltfong and I that Michigan is the early leader to land Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards," Nakos wrote. "Wiltfong and I have logged predictions in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine for Edwards to land at Michigan with 60% confidence. Sherrone Moore’s program is working to rebuild its wide receiver room in the portal, too."
Edwards Jr. does make sense going to the Wolverines as Michigan had a major issue at quarterback this season.
The former Maryland quarterback is projected to be the Wolverines' starting quarterback in 2025. He has proven he can play well in the Big Ten as he was third in the Big Ten in passing with 2,881 yards. Edwards Jr. can also run the ball, which adds another dynamic to the offense.
Although Michigan did land five-star QB Bryce Underwood, the top prospect in the Class of 2025, having him sit for a year wouldn't be that bad. Underwood could learn from Edwards and the college game for a season.
Michigan has four other scholarship quarterbacks slated to be on the roster in 2025: senior Davis Warren, junior Alex Orji, freshman Jadyn Davis and signee Chase Herbstreit. However, whether or not all will remain in Michigan is to be seen, especially if they land Edwards Jr. from Maryland.
Edwards Jr. does have a visit scheduled for Wisconsin, which could hurt Michigan's chances. However, Nakos is one of the top college football insiders and he projects the Maryland quarterback to be a Wolverine in 2025 and be the team's starter.
Michigan coach says the team is looking to add a QB in the portal
Despite Michigan landing the top high school recruit in the Class of 2025, Michigan Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore says the team plans to add a quarterback in the portal.
Moore wants the Wolverines to have a veteran option to start in 2025.
“There’s a lot of positions that we’re adding depth (to) and adding spots to help fill,” Moore said, via Bluebyninety. “The specifics of that, I guess you guys will have to see, but we’re definitely looking for a quarterback in the portal, and we’ll go from there... experience.
A guy that is going to be a great leader and teammate, obviously has the ability to play. Got to be a great fit. That’s going to be the number one piece.”
It appears that QB will be Edwards Jr. who will compete with Underwood for the starting job in 2025.
