College football insider and analyst Josh Pate believes the Georgia Bulldogs offense is better with Gunner Stockton at quarterback than Carson Beck. Beck suffered an injury in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 7 and his status for the Sugar Bowl on January 1 is up in the air.

However, even if he can play, Pate believes Stockton is the better fit for the Bulldogs' offense.

“(Georgia) have historically been able to lean on a ground game," Pate said. "Or, they’ve been able to lean on defense. They’ve got a ton of elite players in that locker room, prideful players in that locker room. What can happen is when your starting quarterback goes down, you get a galvanization that happens in the locker room.
"It happened at halftime against Texas. It wasn't a lead they had to hold onto in the SEC Championship game, they had to take the lead with Gunner Stockton at quarterback."
"What you perceive as a weakness could end up being a net strength," Pate continued. "Not because Gunner Stockton is as good as Carson Beck. But here’s what really matters. If Gunner’s play brings out the best of that team, then that team will be better equipped to win a national title than they would have been (with) Carson back playing. That’s what matters here. That’s why (he’s) a wild card."

Stockton did play well in relief of Beck in the SEC Championship Game. However, Pate thinks Stockton's skillset actually fits Georgia's offense better as he isn't afraid to run the ball.

In the SEC Championship Game, Stockton went 12-for-16 for 71 yards and a pick.

Carson Beck suffered a right elbow injury in the SEC championship game. The school said there is no timetable for his return.

“I’m still trying to get that knowledge myself,” Smart said, via SI . “He did get to have an MRI this morning. We should get the results here in the next few hours. We just had a team meeting. He was there for the team meeting, but we don’t know much more than we knew last night as of right now, but we should be finding out something here soon.”

If Beck can't play, Stockton will start for Georgia. The Bulldogs will play the winner of Notre Dame vs Indiana in the quarterfinals.
