Senior quarterback Carson Beck will not be playing for the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff because of a serious right elbow injury. There were reports that Georgia was figuring out his status and he was expected to miss the quarterfinal matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, it has been confirmed that he will miss the remainder of the season with a UCL tear.
A press release was sent out confirming the news and that Carson Beck had already undergone surgery on Monday:
"Georgia quarterback Carson Beck underwent successful surgery Monday on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, Ca. A full recovery is expected with throwing to begin spring of 2025."
It's unclear if he will be returning to the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2025 college football season or if he will enter the 2025 NFL draft. He finishes his senior season going 290 of 448 (64.7%) for 3,485 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Sophomore Gunner Stockton is expected to be the starter for the remainder of the season.
How did Carson Beck suffer the injury?
Carson Beck has been looking to win his first national championship as a starting quarterback as he has two titles backing up for Stetson Bennett. However, his chance this season has ended as he suffered the season-ending injury on the final play in the first half of the SEC Championship Game against the Texas Longhorns.
Texas linebacker Trey Moore hit Beck's hand/elbow area while the quarterback was scrambling to throw the football. Beck remained on the ground as the play was ruled a fumble and was evaluated by the Georgia medical staff, who ruled him out for the remainder of the game despite coach Kirby Smart considering him as questionable during the halftime interview.
This injury is rare for quarterbacks to suffer, but San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy dealt with the same injury and surgery in the NFC championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles in his rookie season and was able to play before Week 1 of the following season.
