Ryan Day has been the coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes after replacing Urban Meyer near the end of the 2018 season. The 2019 campaign was Day's first proper season as the head coach of the program. The first two years were very successful for him and the Buckeyes, winning consecutive Big Ten championships and competing in the playoffs.
Unfortunately, Ryan Day has not been able to lead Ohio State to the same level of success in the past few years. Their last playoff appearance was during the 2022 season. Furthermore, he has lost four straight games in their heated rivalry against Michigan after Week 14's disappointing 13-10 loss at home.
Following this result, a lot of fans and critics have been vocal about how they want the program to fire Ryan Day for his incompetence. Ex-NFL OT turned analyst Taylor Lewan shares the same sentiment about the future of Ohio State.
On the 'Bussin' with the Boys' show on Wednesday, Lewan talks about how Ryan Day has had a lot of talented players on his roster and the opportunity to help them grow over the years. Unfortunately, the development of these players is lacking under Day's care. He also gave his own suggestions about who would be a good fit for Ohio State.
"Ryan Day has had a full coaching cycle to have freshmen turn into seniors, and the development's not there," Lewan said. "Dude the wide receiver room in Ohio State is insane every single year. Their talent is insane every single year."
"Yeah Brian Hartline (Ohio State Co-OC and WR coach)... You know what he should be? The head coach of Ohio State, if it's not Mike Vrabel. But Mike Vrabel's not going to go...But I tell you what. Mike Vrabel steps his foot in the door into Columbus, you've got a tough ballclub in the next six months."
Brian Hartline has been a part of Ohio State's coaching staff since 2017. He started as an offensive quality control assistant and worked his way up to become the team's co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.
On the other hand, Mike Vrabel also has a history with the Buckeyes since he played for them during his collegiate career. He was previously the head coach of the Tennessee Titans before joining Cleveland this year as the coaching and personnel consultant.
Will Ohio State fire Ryan Day?
Despite the disappointing loss to Michigan and being eliminated from the Big Ten title contention, the program continues to showcase its support for Ryan Day. Ohio State is still a contender in the 12-team playoffs.
Ohio State RD Ross Bjork also stood behind Day despite the criticism and backlash by fans. He stated that they have faith in his capabilities and that the team still has a chance to win the natty.
"Our full focus right now is on the College Football Playoff and making a strong run," Bjork told Columbus Dispatch. "We have a ton to play for. We have a great team made up of talented players and great young men. Coach Day does a great job leading our program. He's our coach."
Ryan Day and the Buckeyes will not receive a bye and will have to compete in the first round to advance in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if Ohio State can become the national champions despite missing out on the Big Ten title game this season.
