Michigan Wolverines running back Donovan Edwards is one of the EA Sports College Football 25 game cover stars alongside Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers and Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter as the popular video game makes a much-anticipated comeback on July 19.
As details from the game keep emerging piecemeal, Edward's various attributes were revealed, including 92 speed, 94 ball-carrying vision, 85 break tackle and an overall rating of 91.
The ratings left college football fans divided, debating over whether the rating was warranted or whether Donovan Edwards deserved a higher rating.
Some fans clearly disagreed with the rating, questioning its veracity.
"Lol how?" one fan tweeted.
"Overrated," another tweeted.
"WACK," one tweeted.
Donovan Edwards feels the pressure of fame
Donovan Edwards is no stranger to fame, announcing himself to the college football fans in stunning fashion in the biggest game of the Michigan Wolverines' calendar against rivals, the Ohio State Buckeyes. He rushed for 216 yards, resulting in two touchdowns, in the pair's fierce clash in Columbus in 2022.
He had an inconsistent 2023 season averaging 28.1 yards over 14 games while sitting in the shadow of fellow running back and captain Blake Corum, who departed for the NFL.
He redeemed himself with a stellar showing in the national championship game against the Washington Huskies, rushing for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Edwards became the first player since the start of the BCS era to tally more than one 40-yard touchdown run in the national championship game. A few months later, he became the face of college football by appearing on the cover of the EA Sports College Football 25 game.
During an interview with USA Today, Edwards talked about the pressure that he was under in his new position.
“I’m in a situation and a platform, where all eyes are on me,” Edwards said. “My question is, ‘What are you going to do when all eyes are on you? Are you going to do nothing? Are you going to go above and beyond?'
“Football is a game of rhythm and feel. If you’re not getting in a rhythm of how you know how you can get into, who’s to say you are going to break 40-, 70-yard touchdowns that you know you are capable of doing?”
It's a statement of his popularity that Donovan Edwards became the first Michigan Wolverines star to appear on the cover of the EA Sports College Football 25 game since quarterback Denard Robinson did in the last edition in 2014.
