The Oregon Ducks and coach Dan Lanning made their presence in the Big Ten known in a big way during the conference's media days on Monday by floating a huge duck on the White River in Indianapolis. The coach was just as upbeat about his team's chances next season.
Lanning put the conference on notice about his team's abilities, innovative and eye-catching uniforms and the culture around the program, calling it "different."
“We’re mighty different in a lot of ways,” Lanning said. “We’re mighty different when it comes to the jerseys that we might wear or the facilities that we get to play in. We’re innovative. We’ve always been on the cutting edge of everything we do.”
College football fans had mixed reactions to the statement by Dan Lanning in the Instagram comments referencing his claim to fame as one-upping Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders during their shared time in the Pac-12 last season as opposed to winning championships.
Reacting to Lanning's statement by referencing the Oregon coach's earlier comments accusing Deion Sanders of playing for clicks, one fan on X (formerly Twitter) said:
"Big “fighting for clicks” energy lol,"
The Dan Lanning vs. Deion Sanders beef reexamined
The media buzz around the Colorado Buffaloes and the Deion Sanders effect enveloped college football at the start of last season, with celebrities flocking to games to be a part of the limelight. Not everyone took it well and one of those was Oregon coach Dan Lanning whose team was undefeated before the teams met in Eugene on September 23, 2023.
The first sign of trouble between the coaches began in August after the Buffaloes announced their move from the Pac-12 to the Big 12. Lanning was asked about the move during a news conference and dismissed Colorado's importance to the conference.
“Not a big reaction,” Dan Lanning said (per USA Today Sports). "I'm trying to remember what they (Colorado) won to affect this conference, and I don't remember. Do you remember them winning anything? I don't remember them winning anything."
A clip of Lanning's team talk before the game went viral, in which the Ducks coach belittled Sander's team accusing them of playing for clicks.
“The Cinderella story is over, men. They’re fighting for clicks, we’re fighting for wins,” Lanning said. “There’s a difference. This game ain’t going to be played in Hollywood. It’s going to be played on the grass.”
Oregon blew out Colorado 42-6 in a clash pitting the No. 10 ranked Ducks and the No. 19 ranked Buffaloes in Eugene.
Dan Lanning will attempt to settle in the Big Ten as Deion Sanders tries to do the same in the Big 12, with college football fans hoping that the two coaches meet again if they make it to the playoffs.
