Drew Allar and the Penn State Nittany Lions will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Orange Bowl on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Ahead of the game, there has been a lot of conversation about what this game could mean for Allar.
Some believe that with a strong enough performance in this game and possibly the national championship game, Allar could declare for the 2025 NFL draft.
On Thursday morning, college football insider Andy Staples held a live broadcast on X to discuss the Orange Bowl, Drew Allar, and college football in general. He spoke about Allar and his decision to return to Penn State for another year on his show, "Andy & Ari."
"Audrey Snyder, the Penn State beat writer for 'The Athletic,' this morning we were talking about the same stuff you and I keep talking about on the show," Staples said. "Audrey's with me, she says he's coming back. The idea that Drew Allar balls out the next two weeks.
"Like if they win tonight and then they win another game and he's unbelievable. I'm still fascinated by that whole scenario. He's an Ohio guy, let's say they beat Ohio State for the Nationl Title, which I realize we are putting the cart way before the horse at this point, but what do you have left to prove at that point?"
Andy Staples talks about the financial aspect of Drew Allar's decision to return to college
Andy Staples also talked about the financial aspect of returning to college vs entering the NFL. Although NIL money allows college players to earn more money than in years past, the NFL provides far more money to players, especially high draft picks.
"That's the other thing, we've talked about this like it's a financial decision but maybe it's not," Staples said. "Some people are just comfortable. Some people do not view the world through, I need to make the most money possible."
Co-host Ari Wasserman brought up the fact that if Drew Allar wins the national championship, he won't have as many financial losses if he returns to college. As a champion, he could earn a large sum of money through an NIL deal.
It will be interesting to see what Allar's decision is after Penn State is done with its CFP run. There are some scouts who believe he could be a first-round pick with a strong finish, whereas others believe he would be better served returning to college for another season.
