Travis Hunter was snubbed for the Jim Thorpe Award last week. Caleb Downs, Malaki Starks and Jahdae Barron were named finalists for the honor.
This led to a series of debates among fans and analysts. CFB analyst RJ Young echoed the growing perception among Colorado fans in his appearance on “The Number One College Football Show,” on Friday.
“There's a growing thought among Colorado fans that there is a conspiracy against all things Colorado,” Young said (Timestamp - 1:27). “And it began a couple of weeks ago when we found out that the Thorpe Award has decided to leave Travis Hunter off its list of three finalists.”
While Hunter was not named among the finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, Young believed he deserved to be the winner. Speaking further on “The Number One College Football Show,” he explained why he is the best defensive back in the nation.
“The guy that I think ought to be at the top of the list and the guy that I believe absolutely — positively should be Thorpe Award winner is Travis Hunter at Colorado,” Young said (timestamp: 2:12).
“It's not just that he got four interceptions which is the same amount as Jahdae Barron at corner, it's also that he has 92 catches for 1,100+ yards and 14 touchdowns. In addition to playing outstanding at corner, he's given up exactly one passing touchdown this season."
Hunter is a finalist for a couple of other college football awards. These include the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, Biletnikoff Award and Paul Hornung Award.
RJ Young discloses who he thinks will win the Heisman Trophy
The Heisman Trophy race is mainly between Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty. RJ Young believes the Colorado two-way star should claim the coveted award ahead of the Boise State running back.
“I think that we've seen dudes do what Ashton Jeanty is doing right now," Young said. (timestamp - 3:37). "We have never ever seen what Travis Hunter is doing at Colorado in the history of the sport. That man has played an equivalent of four years in two."
According to the oddsmakers, Hunter is considered the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. He will become the second defensive player after Charles Woodson to claim the honor. The winner will be announced in New York on Dec.14.
