Ahead of the Stanford Cardinals (2-2, 1-1 ACC) game against the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-3, 0-1) on Saturday, there have been concerns about starting quarterback Ashton Daniels' status. He suffered a lower-body injury in the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 40-14 loss to No. 17 Clemson.
Just a few hours before the 3:30 p.m. ET kick-off time, reporter Pete Thamel provided an update on who will start at quarterback. According to his sources, while Ashton Daniels is expected to be available for the game, Stanford will instead start backup quarterback Justin Lamson.
If Daniels is available, it has not been made clear why the coaching staff would choose to start Lamson instead. It may be a precautionary move, but they are keeping Daniels available if Lamson gets hurt or underperforms.
Stanford head coach Troy Taylor comments on Ashton Daniels and his backup quarterback
Earlier this week, when it was not yet known who would start against Virginia Tech, head coach Troy Taylor was asked about the status of several injured players, including Ashton Daniels. He said about Daniels:
"He's got a chance to play. It'll be just how much he improves thorughout the week, but there's a definite chance he can play."
Ultimately, since Ashton Daniels is not getting the start, it is likely that the coaching staff feels he is too limited by his injury to play. However, he remains day-to-day so he could return as early as next week.
Taylor also spoke about backup quarterback Justin Lamson. He said:
"He gets half the reps in practice each day. So, we've got a lot of confidence in him, he knows the system well so it will not affect play calling at all."
How will missing Ashton Daniels affect the Stanford offense?
Daniels has completed 68 of 115 passing attempts this season, and thrown for 633 yards and six touchdowns. Additionally, he has 50 carries for 250 rushing yards. He is a dynamic player throwing the ball and on his feet.
With him out of the lineup, the Cardinals are losing a player who forces opposing defenses to prepare for him to run on every play. Since he is always a threat on the ground, it opens up space down the field and gives receivers more room to make big plays.
Lamson has not played much in his career. This season he has played parts of four games, but only attempted nine passes and completed five of them. He has 56 passing yards and two touchdowns.
