The Georgia Bulldogs take on the Texas Longhorns in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game on Saturday. The Bulldogs clinched a spot in the SEC Championship Game after closing out their regular season conference play with a 31-17 win over Tennessee.
Despite a late-season surge, questions continue to surround Georgia entering Saturday's matchup due to concerns on the offensive side of the ball. College football insider Harry Lyles Jr. detailed Georgia's offensive concerns on Thursday.
"We're going to have to see something we haven't seen often enough this year, which is a very good Carson Beck," Lyles said on ESPN's 'College Football Live' show. "You're going to have to see Carson Beck really laying some shots in the vertical passing game against a Texas defensive backfield that is perhaps the best in the country."
Lyles pointed the finger at Carson Beck and Georgia's passing offense for a lack of confidence in the Bulldogs to take down Texas in the game. He also pointed out some concerns in the backfield with an injury to star running back Trevor Etienne and a lack of consistency in the receiving core.
Texas favored over Georgia in SEC Championship Game
Despite trouncing the Longhorns 30-15 earlier this season, sportsbooks are once again favoring Texas in the second matchup between these SEC foes. Texas enters this weekend's game as a 2.5-point favorite over Georgia. ESPN's Matchup Predictor also tips the scale in Texas' favor, giving the Longhorns a 61.5% chance to take down the Bulldogs.
Without an SEC Championship Game win on their resume, the road to the College Football Playoff narrows for Georgia. The Bulldogs would finish the season with a 10-3 record on the season and a 3-3 record versus ranked opponents.
Texas is likely already a lock for the playoffs. A loss for the Longhorns would give Texas an 11-2 record on the season with a 4-2 record versus AP Top 25 opponents.
As the 12-team playoff bracket continues to take shape, Saturday's SEC Championship will be one to keep an eye on with bowl season rapidly approaching.
