College football insider J.D. PicKell has dropped his top contenders for the Heisman Trophy ahead of the 2024 college football season. The analyst made four picks for the finals and outlined some honorable mentions.
PicKell's four Heisman finalists are as follows:
- Quinn Ewers
- Carson Beck
- Dillon Gabriel
- Jalen Milroe
PicKell also named Ohio State defensive back Caleb Downs, Missouri wideout Luther Burden, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart as honorable mentions.
Analyzing J.D. PicKell's Heisman finalists ahead of 2024 college football season
Quinn Ewers, Texas
Ewers is entering his fourth collegiate season and his third year with Texas in 2024. The quarterback has racked up 5,656 passing yards and 32 touchdowns across his career. He has also added six rushing touchdowns across 23 games.
Ewers had a fabulous 2023 season, leading Texas to the College Football Playoff. If he has another strong year in 2024, there is a good chance he will win the Heisman Trophy.
Carson Beck, Georgia
Beck redshirted his freshman year with the Bulldogs in 2020 and was then part of the team that won back-to-back national championships. The quarterback was named the team's starter in the 2023 season, but the Bulldogs didn't get into the College Football Playoff.
While PicKell and many others believe Beck is the favorite to win the Heisman in 2024, the signal-caller must deliver for Georgia. Beck finished with 3,941 passing yards and 24 touchdowns last season, while also rushing for four scores.
Dillon Gabriel, Oregon
Gabriel transferred to Oregon this offseason on the back of three seasons with the UCF Knights and then two with the Oklahoma Sooners. The quarterback has amassed 14,865 passing yards and 124 touchdowns across 50 games in his career.
Since this could be Gabriel's last season at the college level, he will want to make history with Oregon, a program that has never won the national title. Gabriel is expected to work well under a high-scoring Ducks team coached by Dan Lanning. His Heisman credentials will be tested in the upcoming season.
Jalen Milroe, Alabama
Milroe led Alabama to the SEC title and to the College Football Playoff in 2023, which was his first season as a starter. The quarterback now aims to propel the Tide to the national championship in 2024.
Under the guidance of coach Kalen DeBoer, Milroe is expected to have a top season. The signal-caller posted 12 rushing touchdowns last season, showing that his running game can boost his chances of winning a Heisman Trophy.
