Rumors around SEC expansion continue to intensify as Clemson and Florida State seek to exit the ACC. The SEC added Texas and Oklahoma to its now 16-team lineup this summer, with both making their first appearance in the Media Days this week in Dallas.
While SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey noted that the conference is focused on its pre-existing teams, college football insider Brett McMurphy presents a different view on SEC expansion. He believes Florida State and Clemson are more likely to land in the SEC rather than the Big 12, despite speculation. During his appearance on "The Next Round," McMurphy reported:
"If they (FSU and Clemson) get out at a low number and that allows everybody else to do a conga line out the door, then they'll end up in the SEC or the Big Ten. Then, the Big Ten goes to 20, the SEC goes to 20, whoever is left over after that goes to the Big 12, they go to 20, and then we're down to three power leagues.” (Time stamp: 3:31)
Florida State and Clemson are not wanted in Big Ten and SEC expansion
While Brett McMurphy sees a future for Florida State and Clemson in the SEC expansion or Big Ten if they manage to exit the conference, he notes that neither school is wanted in either league:
“The Big Ten and the SEC do not want them. I can't get it any simpler than that. I talked to over a dozen people, university presidents, conference personnel, athletic directors and consultants. Everyone said the same thing.
“... The Big Ten doesn't view Florida State as someone they can trust. They are a disruptive force. They don't want to bring the type of partner into the league and that's the university presidents talking.” (Time stamp: 1:37)
While Florida State and Clemson have been strongly linked with Big 12 in the past weeks, McMurphy doesn't see the two moving to that conference. He feels there will be some consideration by the Big Ten or SEC if an implosion occurs in the ACC.
