Coacing Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes is one of the most pressure-cooked positions in college football. No matter the amount of success during the regular season, only two things matter in Columbus: beating the Michigan Wolverines in "The Game" and winning the national championship.
Ryan Day has been unable to do either since taking over for Urban Meyer towards the end of the 2018 college football season. Entering the national championship game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, he has a 69-10 record and is 1-4 against the Wolverines.
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports gave his insight ahead of the Cotton Bowl as to what he would suggest Ryan Day do whenever the season ends for the Ohio State Buckeyes concludes.
"Call this more advice than hope. Whenever this Ohio State team ends, win or lose in this chase for the school's first national championship in 10 years, Day should get up at the postgame podium and check out.
"He should thank everyone before politely stepping down from his post as Ohio State's coach. If he wasn't such a decent guy, I could envision Day at least considering what Bobby Knight said out loud for his walk off." h/t Sports Illustrated
It will be interesting to see what he does for his future and if he is on the sidelines in Columbus for the 2025 college football season.
How long is Ryan Day's contract with Ohio State?
Ryan Day is under contract for a handful of more seasons. He signed a seven-year contract and in May 2022, agreed a two-year extension, keeping him under contract through the 2028 college football season. That means if he stays through his deal, there will be another four seasons of Day at Ohio State.
If he leaves Ohio State, he has a pretty significant contract buyout. Day has a $36.53 million contract buyout, which could deter other programs and/or NFL teams from pursuing him as a potential new coach. While it doesn't mean it's impossible for Day to leave Ohio State before his contract expires, don't expect it to happen this offseason.
