The Georgia Bulldogs are the favorites to win the national championship this season. They have been ranked No. 1 in the preseason rankings.
If Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs were to win the national championship this season, it would be their third title in four years. However, the likes of the Texas Longhorns, Ohio State Buckeyes and Oregon Ducks are all strong enough to stop them in their quest.
On Wednesday, Stephen A. Smith gave his pick of which team will be the one to stop Georgia from winning the national championship on "First Take":
“Why did they not have a three-peat? Because they ran into Alabama."
Smith picked the Alabama Crimson Tide to be the team that will stop the Bulldogs.
The Crimson Tide are the No. 5-ranked team and should be able to have a strong season under new coach Kalen DeBoer. However, due to the new coach and slightly weaker roster from last season, combined with the addition of the strong Texas Longhorns to the Southeastern Conference, not many view Alabama as a lock.
This is except for Stephen A Smith.
"Since the start of 2020, what is Georgia’s record against Alabama? 1-3," Smith said. "What is Kirby Smart’s record against Alabama? 1-5.”
Georgia has indeed struggled to defeat Alabama in recent years. Their meeting in 2023 was in the SEC championship game, where the undefeated, top-ranked Bulldogs were defeated by No. 8 Alabama 27-24 and lost their chance to make it into the College Football Playoff.
College football analyst thinks Alabama is overrated
Alabama was ranked as the No. 5 team in the preseason rankings. But while Stephen A. Smith thinks the Crimson Tide could cause a suprise, another college football insider thinks that they are overrated.
RJ Young spoke to Fox Sports about Alabama:
"I'm shocked at where Alabama is. I think they're overrated at No. 5 because we're treating this Alabama team like it is still coached by Nick Saban and it is not."
Many unknowns surround this Alabama team. Most of these are due to the absence of former coach Nick Saban and his replacement Kalen DeBoer.
However, in a couple of weeks, college football will find out if the Kalen DeBoer era of Alabama football will be able to live up to the expectations fans have of him and the program.
