The Big 12 expansion is getting ready to take significant strides towards conference realignment. It is believed that the ACC teams to the Big 12 will be the best way for the expansion. That could lead to a similar fate to what the Pac-12 Conference suffered.

College football insider Greg Swaim posted on social media about this idea. Apparently, he is hearing that the Big 12 expansion could happen soon. However, they are not going to take more than 4-6 schools.

"Yes, the #Big12 is absolutely going to poach multiple teams from the #ACC, and ironically it's been confirmed to me by the exact same source in Chicago who's helped me out with info a year ago that the Four Corners #Pac12 schools would join the #Big12, and he's let me know repeatedly over the years that the B10 will NOT add any non-AAU accredited schools."

Swaim added:

"I'm as confident as I've ever been about the ACC exodus to the B12, but they'll only take between 4-6 schools, so if a school misses out in this round of musical chairs, they're likely left out of the P3, as at that point it's not likely that the remaining ACC teams will have much 'power'."

This would be an interesting wrinkle as the Atlantic Coast Conference would suffer a trajectory similar to what the Pac-12 Conference went through a few years ago. If the Big 12 expansion can take some of the upper-tier programs from the ACC, this would be a great sign for Brett Yormark's league going forward.

What would ACC teams to the Big 12 mean for college football?

If the Big 12 expansion sees ACC teams moving to the Big 12, it would have a significant impact on the history of college football. This would make Big 12 even bigger competitors with the Big Ten and the SEC going forward.

The AAU accreditation reportedly being a major factor in the Big 12 expansion leaves a bit of a wrinkle for the conference. That means the only ACC teams in the Big 12 could be:

  • North Carolina Tar Heels
  • Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  • Pittsburgh Panthers
  • Miami Hurricanes
  • Stanford Cardinal
  • Duke Blue Devils
  • Virginia Cavaliers
  • Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Two major omissions to that list are the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles. However, getting some ACC teams to the Big 12 is going to be significantly better for both the conference and the teams that are joining.

This opens the door for other teams to join the Big Ten or SEC as well. These teams have to find ways to be part of the Power 3 conferences, otherwise they risk being a Group of Five conference. This would significantly see their annual revenue decrease as the media rights deal lose their value.

The Big 12 expansion means it is eat or be eaten for the ACC teams.
