The Florida State Seminoles are in dire straits after a 42-16 blowout loss to the SMU Mustangs in Week 5 of college football action. Embattled coach Mike Norvell has now led his team to a 1-4 start to the season.

During an episode of "Always College Football," analyst Greg McElroy was blunt in his assessment of the Seminoles' season (22:30).

"Florida State, there is no one in college football that's more disappointing than Florida State. Coming in, win season total at 9.5, and to currently be 1-4 with that one win coming against Cal in impressive yet in less than impressive fashion. Florida State is struggling!" McElroy said.
"It's their offensive weapons, they have not been able to run the football. You have one of the most experienced offensive lines and they haven't been able to impose their will whatsoever and the defense has been pretty leaky sometimes against the run."

Analyst spells doom for the Florida State Seminoles

Just last year, the Florida State Seminoles went 13-1 and their omission from the college football playoffs caused outrage all over the country.

Analyst Joel Klatt was critical of coach Mike Norvell's team during the latest episode of the "Joel Klatt Show" (28:25).

“What’s going on at Florida State? Hello? What are we doing?” Klatt said. “This was a top-10 team in the preseason and they’re nowhere to be found. I mean like nowhere to be found.
“They just got housed by SMU, the team that is not taking a dime to be in their conference. The team that’s boosters are flipping the bill to pay for everything just so they can play in the ACC on the ACC Network. And then they host the team that just won the conference, felt like they got snubbed from the college football playoff, and SMU houses them.”

Klatt spelled doom on the Seminoles season with their schedule containing games against an improved Clemson Tigers, the unbeaten Duke Blue Devils and the Cam Ward-led Miami Hurricanes.

Not to mention the significant injuries that Florida State has suffered with the loss of quarterback DJ Uigalelei who has a broken finger necessitating the use of backup Brock Glenn.

“DJU is now going to be out with a broken finger. Brock Glenn is going to start against Clemson,” Klatt said. “Their next three is against Clemson, 5-0 Duke, at Miami. They could be starting 1-7. In fact, likely."
"Remember now, it’s not just like, ‘Oh those games,’ they’ve lost to Georgia Tech, Boston College, Memphis and SMU and you’re expecting them to win any of the next three against Clemson, a 5-0 Duke team with Manny Diaz, and No. 8 Miami, on the road, by the way? 1-7 is like bang, right here. We’re staring down the barrel, Florida State, at 1-7. 1-7.”

The hole that the Florida State Seminoles currently find themselves in would've been impossible for anyone to picture with a top ten AP Preseason ranking standing as proof of how highly rated they were.
