Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive tackle Joe Alt was picked No. 5 overall by the Los Angeles Chargers during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, forty years after his father, offensive tackle John Alt, was also picked in the first round.
During the ceremony, Alt's longtime girlfriend, Emilie Meyer, was caught on camera with an awkward expression after her boyfriend's name was called as the No. 5 pick.
College football fans were quick to pounce at the expression on X (formerly Twitter) and had some light fun with it.
"She been kidnapped? Can we get a wellness check?," said a fan on X.
Another fan was just confused about the lack of reaction.
"Did they not have the volume up?? No reaction!?" One fan tweeted.
""I know the way he is... he didn't want to go there" look." One fan chimed in.
Others wondered if the expression reflected the sentiment about living in California and the high housing prices in LA.
"I’d have that reaction, too, if I had to move to California," another fan tweeted.
"She's thinking about how much a house in LA costs!" One fan tweeted.
"That’s the face of someone who realized that his game checks will be taxed at 65% because he’ll be in Cali," One fan commented.
One fan gave the actual reason behind the awkward expression:
"An awkward 30 second delay. Plus, she looks like a cartoon character."
Joe Alt was a no-brainer for the Chargers
Joe Alt was getting rave reviews even before the draft, with Sports Illustrated's analyst Albert Breer revealing on the "Rich Eisen Show" how highly regarded the OT was in NFL circles after his showing during the Notre Dame Pro Day.
"I've talked to a couple of evaluators over the last few days who've compared him to Joe Thomas," Albert Breer said. "I talked to one GM who said his pro day was 'the best pro day I've ever seen from an offensive lineman.'
"One veteran evaluator I talked to had Alt behind only [wideout Marvin Harrison Jr.] among the best players in this draft class."
The Los Angeles Chargers opted to pick an offensive tackle over a wide receiver, an area where they might be short, having traded Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears for a future fourth-round pick.
They also released Mike Williams, and it was a toss-up between getting a wide receiver or offensive tackle for the Chargers, who have prioritized the offensive line three out of the last four times with their round-one picks.
The wide receiver room was also stacked in the class of 2024, and two prime prospects, former LSU Tigers star Malik Nabers and Washington Huskies sensation Rome Odunze, were both available when the Chargers picked Alt.
Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh explained the rationale behind picking Alt over a wide receiver.
“I know the question is going to come up and you’re going to say, ‘What about a weapon?’ Offensive linemen, we look at as weapons,” Harbaugh said (via AP News). “That group, when we talk about attacking, offensive line is the tip of the spear.”
Joe Alt is the first Fighting Irish prospect to be picked in the top five of the NFL Draft since quarterback Rick Mirer was picked second overall by the Seattle Seahawks in 1993.
