The Ohio State Buckeyes were ranked No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll released on Monday, with seven first-place votes. Coach Ryan Day's team sits just behind coach Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs who received 46 first-place votes.
The poll is held weekly throughout the college football season and involves a pool of coaches from the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) who continuously submit their top 25 votes every week with different places on the list worth a different number of points.
College football fans on X had mixed reactions to Ohio State occupying second place on the preseason poll. Some fans saw this as OSU once again being overrated by the coaches.
Meanwhile, others defended OSU's high ranking, with some thinking the Buckeyes should be higher.
"@OhioStateFB has the best roster. @UGAAthletics has proven themselves as a program. But OSU was a missed fg from stomping TCU and being the proven program. They should be #1. Hook em," one fan tweeted.
"Personally, I am surprised that @OhioStateFB received so few first place votes. Not that I disagree with @GeorgiaFootball at 1. Overall, this isn’t “terrible.” Poor Florida, essentially their entire schedule is on this list. Ouch," another fan tweeted.
"Ohio State too low, k The Dawgs the only team than can rival/beat them this year. Really not even concerned or considering the rest. Texas could be a sleeper too tho can’t ever count out a blue blood," one fan tweeted.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day under pressure in 2024
Ohio State coach Ryan Day has consistently had some of the best teams in college football but has not delivered a national championship as expected.
Last year, the Buckeyes lost to coach Jim Harbaugh's Michigan Wolverines in "The Game" and their fans had to endure watching their eternal rivals complete an unbeaten season to win a national championship.
During an appearance on ESPN's "First Take, controversial analyst Paul Finebaum highlighted the pressure that Ryan Day is under to deliver next season, especially in the heated rivalry game against the Michigan Wolverines. (Start at 2:13)
“Here’s the problem with talking about Ryan Day. You look at his record… it’s gaudy. Nobody has a record like him. Except you can’t choke the biggest game of the year,” Finebaum said.
“And to me, if he can’t beat Michigan this year when he’s got probably the best team in the countrylalong with Georgia, after Harbaugh leaves, after all those great players depart after a national championship, he ought to be gone. It’s as simple as that. That’s the biggest game of the year in the Big Ten.”
The Ohio State Buckeyes are clear favorites to win the Big Ten championship (+155) according to FanDuel just ahead of conference newcomers, coach Dan Lanning's Oregon Ducks.
FBS coaches seem to agree that 2024 is the year for coach Day's team to finally win titles with their closest rivals, the Wolverines decimated with a sign-stealing investigation, a first-year coach, and the loss of a huge chunk of starters from last year.
