Boise State Broncos star running back Ashton Jeanty has grabbed headlines with his phenomenal play this season. Jeanty has distinguished himself as one of the most exciting players to watch since the season started.
During the Week 6 clash pitting the Broncos against the Utah State Aggies, he rushed for 186 yards, including three touchdowns on 13 carries, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards, which tied an FBS record for fewest games played to reach the landmark.
College football fans on X were in awe of Ashton Jeanty's statistics.
"Unheard of numbers 🤯," one fan commented.
Some fans compared him to some of the greats of the game and tabbed him for the Heisman.
"He is Barry Sanders reincarnated," one fan tweeted.
"If he continues at or near this pace he should hands down be the Heisman. It shouldn’t be a debate," another fan tweeted.
"Heisman," one fan tweeted.
Ashton Jeanty could have had better statistics
The Broncos running back was listed as the No. 1 favorite for the Heisman Trophy after previous favorite Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe's team was upset by the Vanderbilt Commodores in Week 6.
Jeanty's mind-boggling statistics were compared to football great Barry Sanders, who won the Heisman Trophy with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 1998 after tallying 2,628 yards resulting in 37 touchdowns.
Through the first five games between both, Ashton Jeanty compares favorably to Sanders. Sanders had 1,002 rushing yards on 130 carries, while Jeanty has 1,031 yards on 90 carries.
Despite his stunning statistics, Jeanty could have had better statistics. He was pulled out for the second half of the games against Utah State and Portland State due to blowouts.
During his postgame news conference, Boise State coach Spencer Danielson explained why he was benched.
"First off, Ashton Jeanty? Best player in the country. Next question," Danielson said. "It's all about the team, and Ashton is the same way. We protect him. We're going to be smart with Ashton because of how vital he is to our team, and we need to make sure we get other guys reps in there.
"Also, at that point, I don't know what his rush yards were, but we know he had enough."
For the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Ashton Jeanty will see a stiff competition from quarterbacks like the Miami Hurricanes' Cam Ward and Texas Longhorns star Quinn Ewers. Still, he is making a case to be included among the elite in college football.
