The Colorado Buffaloes played perhaps their most complete game of the Deion Sanders era in what was expected to be a heated rivalry game against the Colorado State Rams. Instead, the Buffs barely got out of second gear and cruised to an easy 28-9 win.
Instead of benching his starters when the game was effectively won in the fourth quarter, Sanders said that he took the game personally which is why he decided not to take them off the field. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns but kept throwing the ball instead of running it to keep the clock going.
During his postgame news conference, the Colorado coach said that his decision to not pull his starters was not due to a revenge mission but wanting to score.
“The game is about scoring, isn’t it?” Deion Sanders said. “I don’t know protocol… As long as the other team is trying to score, we trying to score. That’s my rule.”
College football fans on X had mixed reactions about how the Buffs won the game.
Some fans thought that the Buffs should have simply run the ball to close out the game.
"kneel the ball. respect the football gods," one fan tweeted.
"Y’all need to run the ball when their is less then 2 mins left," another one tweeted.
"Again with the end of game playcalling?" One fan tweeted.
Deion Sanders criticizes Colorado State Rams
The games between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Colorado State Rams became even more interesting last season after the arrival of Deion Sanders, who traded verbal jabs with Rams coach Jay Norvell.
According to him, a Rams player elbowed Buffs receivers coach Jason Phillips during warmups and their QB Brayden Fowler Nicolosi insulted two-way star Travis Hunter during the game.
During his postgame news conference, Sanders was critical of all the antics of the Rams players.
"Wonderful game. Personal game. Heartfelt game. Emotional game. They kinda make it like that," Sanders said. "The disrespect was uncalled for during the week. We knew coming into the game it would be a bit personal. I just pray that our kids would never act in that matter, cause y'all would have a field day with it."
Despite the off-field issues, Sanders is optimistic that his team is headed in the right direction despite a sluggish start to the season and the criticism that his offensive line has received.
“You see this arrow is headed in the right direction, especially defensively,” Deion Sanders said. “And you know, everybody knows the formula: You protect 2 (Shedeur), you go. It’s simple.”
The Buffs will have the chance to show their improved form during their first Big 12 game against the Baylor Bears in Week 4 of college football action.
