On Monday, 10TV Sports anchor Adam King tweeted Chip Kelly's answer to the biggest difference between being a head coach and his current role as Ohio State's offensive coordinator. Kelly's answer? Bathroom breaks.
Kelly, who’s coached at Oregon, in the NFL, and most recently at UCLA, is one of the most respected offensive minds in the game. But in his new role with the Buckeyes, he’s enjoying a simple perk of being an OC:
"You can go to the bathroom between series if you have to," Kelly said. "It's about the only difference I think, it's always kinda tough, Coach Coop can tell you that on the sideline, it's really difficult to say ‘hey, I’m going to leave,' you know what I mean? But there's a bathroom upstairs by the booth if need be."
Kelly’s lighthearted response reflects how comfortably he’s adjusted with the No. 3 Buckeyes, off to a 4-0 start. The defense has been dominant, holding opponents to 14 points or less in every game.
Meanwhile, the offense has been rolling, racking up 52, 56, 49, and 38 points in their first four outings. Ohio State's offense ranks fifth in the nation with an impressive 534.8 yards per game. They're also scoring big, sitting fourth with 48.8 points per game.
With Ryan Day leading the way as head coach and Kelly calling plays, the Buckeyes are looking strong on both sides of the ball.
Chip Kelly has an incredible amount of talent on offense
Leading Chip Kelly's offense this season is a trio of standout running backs: Quinshon Judkins, TreVeyon Henderson, and James Peoples, who have already racked up 807 rushing yards in just four games.
But the Buckeyes aren’t just about their ground game. Their wide receiver group — Jeremiah Smith, Emeka Egbuka, and Carnell Tate —has been just as impressive, hauling in 54 catches for 945 yards so far.
After leaving UCLA to join Ohio State as offensive coordinator, Kelly made some sacrifices. He reportedly gave up a $6.1 million salary for $2 million, but in exchange, he lightened his workload, cutting back on off-field duties more than his paycheck drop.
The road ahead won't be easy, though. A trip to face No. 6 Oregon is just two weeks away, followed by a tough matchup at Penn State in November.
