Cincinnati picked up a 24-14 home win on the strength of 24 unanswered first half points over the Arizona State Sun Devils. QB Brendan Sorsby rushed for two first-half scores for the victorious Bearcats.

Cincinnati (5-2, 3-1) and Arizona State (5-2, 2-2) battled in a quest to move up a significant ladder in the Big 12 race. While BYU already moved to 4-0 in league play, with the win, Cincinnati pulled within a game of the Cougars atop the league.

Arizona State came in off a win over then-ranked Utah, and with games still to come against Kansas State and BYU, could still be a significant factor in the league race. Running back Cam Skattebo has been one of the Big 12's top offensive standouts this year.

Cincinnati had meager preseason expectations, but has been surprisingly effective in the young season. The Bearcats were fresh off a win over UCF, but have yet to face Colorado, Iowa State, or Kansas State, so their hopes of a winning season gained a substantial boost with a home win over the Sun Devils.

Arizona State drove down the field and scored on their first possession with a 2 yard Skattebo run. But the Sun Devils were without starting QB Sam Leavitt and then found themselves on the business end of a 24-0 run from Cincinnati.

The Bearcats skillfully blended passes from Brendan Sorsby with effective runs. Sorsby himself scored a pair of TDs, the second extending the Bearcat edge to 24-7 shortly before halftime.

While Arizona State added a third quarter score to pull within 24-14, they would not get closer.

Arizona State has an off week and will then travel to Oklahoma State for a November 2nd game. Cincinnati travels to Colorado next week for a battle with Deion Sanders' Buffs.
