Texas Longhorns RB CJ Baxter joined Steve Sarkisian's team as a freshman last season. He played in 13 games last season and tallied a total of 659 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
However, Baxter injured himself during the Longhorns' fall practice. So what exactly happened to the young running back?
CJ Baxter's injury update
As per an update by college football insider CJ Vogel, CJ Baxter suffered a leg injury during the Texas Longhorns' practice. He also stated that the running back will have tests done to find out how serious the injury is.
"I can confirm that #Texas RB CJ Baxter left practice today with a leg injury. Baxter will undergo an MRI this evening to determine severity," CJ Vogel wrote.
Texas football reporter Anwar Richardson also provided an update on the injury, stating that Baxter had specifically hurt his knee. After the practice session ended, the sophomore running back was seen exiting the field with the help of crutches.
The 19-year-old from Edgewater High School in Florida was gearing up for his second season under head coach Steve Sarkisian.
What does CJ Baxter's injury mean for Steve Sarkisian's SEC debut?
If the running back suffered a long-term injury, then Sarkisian and the Longhorns will have to go through several adjustments in their RB department for their SEC debut this year.
Baxter was a key player last season on the roster. Despite missing two games due to a foot injury, he quickly regained his starting job after Jonathan Brooks went out with an ACL injury.
Apart from Baxter, another reliable RB that the Longhorns have in their back pocket is Jaydon Blue. Both the RBs were named in the preseason Doak Walker Award list, the top award given to the nation's best running back per On3.
Blue Blue had 533 yards from scrimmage (398 rushing, 135 receiving) with four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) as a sophomore last season. If Baxter remains injured, then Blue will have to shoulder the responsibilities in the Longhorns backfield.
Blue might also have to share those responsibilities with Tre Wisner during Baxter's absence. This situation may also provide the opportunity for freshmen Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark to make their mark on the field. But fans will be hoping for a positive outcome from Baxter's injury update.
