Following his hiring as the new coach of Delaware State, DeSean Jackson is getting a lot of support from Deion Sanders. In a social media post on Wednesday, Sanders made a shoutout and called for widespread public support for the former NFL wide receiver.
“We’ve got to wrap our arms around this game-changer and give him all the support he needs to become a successful college football coach,” Sanders wrote. “He knows the game, knows what it takes to make it to the next level and he knows right from wrong. @DeSeanJackson10 Love ya Man! #CoachPrime"
Jackson followed in the footsteps of Coach Prime by starting his coaching career in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Sanders took an unexpected route in his football journey when he became a college football coach in 2020. The Pro Football Hall of Famer was hired by Jackson State, where he recorded significant success before transitioning to Colorado.
This has created a pathway for other former NFL stars to start their coaching career. In his introductory press conference, Jackson said:
"I know a lot of people say, 'Coach Prime, Coach Prime.' I respect him and he gave us, guys like myself, an opportunity. I'm going to do it differently than Prime. I'm going to do it the Coach Jackson way."
DeSean Jackson outlines his dreams at Delaware State
While DeSean Jackson is expected to start something new from the ground and steadily take the Hornets to the top, the former wide receiver has a different plan.
"We're not rebuilding," Jackson said. "This isn't rebuilding. We don't have time to waste. We're doing this right now.
"The Celebration Bowl. The Celebration Bowl is the annual matchup between the best team in the SWAC vs. the best of the MEAC. "We ain't waiting. We want to be there this year. We want to win the MEAC this year."
Jackson faces a significant challenge in revitalizing a Delaware State program coming off a 1-11 season. Turning things around will require a concerted effort by altering the team's culture, recruiting talent and instilling a winning mentality.
