Coach Prime drops 1-word message to pay tribute to Colorado legend Bill McCartney after his death

Coach Prime is someone who uses his social media frequently. He can often be found on X or Instagram supporting his friends and family members in various situations. On Saturday, he posted on his Instagram story about a Colorado Buffaloes legend who died Friday. He paid tribute to Buffaloes legend Bill McCartney with a one-word message:

"Legend."

Bill McCartney died Friday after suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease since 2016.

Coach Prime hopes to follow in Bill McCartney's footsteps in Colorado

Coach Prime had a successful second season as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, but he is a long way from following in the footsteps of Buffaloes legend Bill McCartney. McCartney was the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes from 1982 to 1994. He coached the team through the best stretch in its history.

McCartney's tenure with the Buffaloes started out poorly, with three losing seasons from 1982 to 1984. However, he helped turn the team around and never had a losing season again from that point. After steadily improving the roster over several seasons, the Buffaloes broke out with an 11-1 season in the 1989 season.

The team won the Big Eight Championship, the team's first conference championship since 1976. However, the next season was his best in the team's history. McCartney led his team to an 11-1-1 record and a national championship. To date, that is the only national championship the Colorado Buffaloes won.

The unprecedented stretch of success continued in 1991. While the team regressed to an 8-3-1 record, it was still able to win the Big Eight Championship. McCartney coached the team to three more winning seasons before retiring in 1994 at the age of 54.

McCartney holds the record for most games coached (153), most wins (93), and most conference wins (58) in the program's history. All of those records will be hard for Coach Prime to catch.

Coach Prime appears dedicated to the Colorado Buffaloes for the foreseeable future, despite both his sons leaving for the NFL after this season. Despite rumors that Deion Sanders could take an NFL job, he has said several times that he is happy in Colorado. It will be interesting to see if anything changes on that front in the coming months.
