Coach Prime is bringing the heat to the Alamo Bowl! It isn’t another regular game for the Pro Football Hall of Famer; he wants to make a statement.
Under Sanders' leadership, the Buffs will face off against the BYU Cougars, and the Colorado HC is using every opportunity to motivate his team, even playfully calling out his son, Shilo.
In a recent pep talk, Sanders used Shilo as an example, saying:
"We have an event today. If anybody misses, like, that idiot, something named Shilo, you are not playing this game. Everybody's going to be at the event… "(03:40)
This Alamo Bowl appearance is a big deal for Colorado. If Sanders and Co. win the game, it’ll be a befitting end to Deion’s 9-3 season in his second year in charge.
Both teams are hungry for a win. BYU, led by Kalani Sitake, aims for their fifth 11-win season in program history. He’ll face the challenge of stopping Coach Prime’s other son – Shedeur Sanders, from finding his groove.
The 57-year-old is not focused on discussing his future but on winning the Alamo Bowl for the Colorado faithful. Ahead of the matchup, Sanders issued a warning to his players:
“If I smell smoke on any floor or if I get someone that tells me somebody is smoking on that floor, that will be your last puff. I promise you, if I smell smoke on your clothes at practice in the morning, at breakfast, at anything, that’s gonna be your last time.”
The Buffs haven't won a bowl game since 2004; this is their first appearance since 2020.
Coach Prime has no intention of leaving Colorado
The rumor mill has been churning this season, linking Coach Prime to the NFL. However, the Colorado HC put his foot down, addressing the rumors about his future with a clear message about his contract extension talks. Sanders appeared on "The Rich Eisen Show" and said:
“We’re trying to work something out here. As you speak, I’m not going to lie about that, as you speak. I have one of the best AD’s in the country, Rick George, and I'm confident that we are going to get something done.” [12:20]
While this isn't an official announcement of an extension, it’s a strong indication that negotiations are underway. Sanders’ present contract, a five-year, $29.5 million deal signed in 2023, keeps him at Boulder until 2027. According to BetBGM, his contract “calls for a renegotiation period, especially after Year 3."
