Colorado suffered a disappointing loss to BYU in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas. The Cougars outclassed the Buffaloes to record a dominant 36-14 win in the game, showcasing the brilliance that Kalani Sitake’s team has exuded for most of the season.
Despite the loss, the Buffaloes helped draw a lot of attention to the bowl game. The matchup was witnessed by a whopping eight million viewers, the highest in the history of the Alamo Bowl. Played in front of a sell-out crowd at the Alamodome, the game was aired live on ABC.
The record viewership for the game got a surprising reaction from Deion Sanders Jr. on social media. Amazed at the attention it got, the Well Off Media founder was also disappointed Colorado got blown out in front of such a large television audience across the country.
“Damn… 8 million people saw us get clapped,” Deion Jr. wrote.
The eight million viewers recorded in the Alamo Bowl game between Colorado and BYU was 200,000 more viewers than the previous record in the bowl game. This came between Michigan State and Texas Tech in 2010 and Texas vs Iowa in 2006, which both recorded 7.8 million viewers.
Here’s a look at what the top five most-watched Alamo Bowl games now look like:
- BYU vs. Colorado, Dec. 28, 2024 — 8 million viewers
- Michigan State vs. Texas Tech, Jan. 2, 2010 — 7.8 million viewers
- Texas vs. Iowa, Dec. 30, 2006 — 7.8 million viewers
- Oregon vs. Texas, Dec. 30, 2013 — 7.5 million viewers
- Oregon vs. TCU, Jan. 2, 2016 — 7.2 million viewers
BYU-Colorado also sets highest non-CFP or New Year's Six bowl game viewership since 2020
Beyond the Alamo Bowl, the milestone also represents the highest viewership for a non-College Football Playoff or New Year’s Six bowl game since 2020. This was the Citrus Bowl, which showcased a matchup between Alabama and Michigan.
Colorado has been at the center of attention since Deion Sanders was hired ahead of the 2023 college football season. The program struggled significantly in all quarters before Coach Prime's arrival in Boulder. However, the tide has changed significantly in two years.
The Alamo Bowl viewership record is a testament to the growing influence of the Buffaloes under the leadership of Sanders. The team has been huge on television in the last two seasons, having a host of its games ranked among the most watched throughout the year.
Boasting a couple of top talents like Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the Buffs were a fun team to watch in 2024. The program also experienced significant growth on the field this season, finishing with a 9-3 record.
