Nick Saban ended his time at Alabama in January following the Rose Bowl game against Michigan. He announced a widely unexpected retirement after a successful 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa and was almost immediately replaced by Kalen DeBoer, who was previously at Washington.
While he won't be on the sideline next season, Nick Saban and his wife, Terry, have played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition in the football program. Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne made mention of this in a recent interview with Crimson Tide Sports Network.
“One of the really incredible things in this transition is Coach Saban and Miss Terry have been so supportive,” Byrne said. “And at the same time, Coach (Kalen) DeBoer and his wife Nicole have embraced them as well.”
Greg Byrne believes Coach Saban and Miss Terry’s effort is good for Alabama
The exit of Nick Saban from Alabama created some scare within and outside the football program. Many were wary of the future of the program, which was dominant during his reign.
However, he remains in Tuscaloosa to ensure a smooth transition in the program as Kalen DeBoer takes over. This is viewed as a strong development for the program by Greg Byrne, especially to those watching from afar.
“That's healthy for everybody involved. It's healthy for our program,” Byrne said. “That sends the right message out there to the college football world and the high school football world. You can see that Coach DeBoer and his staff are doing a nice job in recruiting.
“It's good to see that energy continue, and that's critical. And as you can imagine, we spend a lot of time and energy focused on what gives us the best opportunity to have success in the transition.”
DeBoer acknowledges the process might not be perfect
While the transition has gone well at Alabama, Greg Byrne acknowledges it might not be entirely perfect. Nonetheless, the athletic department is getting itself ready for the challenges that might arise in the future.
“We won't be perfect," Byrne said. "We'll make mistakes through it. But I want our fans to know that we spent a lot of time trying to prepare for that.
“We couldn't ask for a better partnership and support than both Coach Saban and Miss Terry, the DeBoers and everybody around have been doing to walk through this together, and I guess it's the best chance for long-term success.”
Kalen DeBoer takes charge of his first season as the coach of the Crimson Tide in the next couple of months and there's a lot of anticipation around college football. Many are waiting to see what becomes of the dominant Alabama program in the post-Saban era.
