The Michigan Wolverines lost up to 17 starters from last season's all-conquering, unbeaten, national championship-winning team. Perhaps the most important position that they lost was at quarterback, with J.J. McCarthy being drafted No. 10 by the Minnesota Vikings.

Less than three weeks before the Wolverines' season opener against the Fresno State Bulldogs, first-year coach Sherrone Moore is yet to find a QB1 to replace McCarthy.

The candidates under consideration for the position are Alex Orji, Jack Tuttle, Jadyn Davis and Davis Warren.

During Tuesday's news conference, Moore gave an update about the battle for the Wolverines' QB1 spot, not committing to any of the prospects in contention for the much-sought-after job.

“I mean, they’ve all been really good,” Moore said. “They’ve had their days that one guy has been good, one guy has been really good, one guy has been better. So, not a frontrunner. Really kind of all even playing right now. No.
"I mean, could be the week of, could be the day of the game. I think we’ll see. We’ll see how we go into this week, next week, and then game week."

According to the Wolverines Online, Warren Davis and Alex Orji have played the most snaps in the position during fall camp, with Jack Tuttle sidelined due to an injury.

The Michigan coach expressed his confidence in the options that he has at his disposal despite none of them having extensive college football experience.

Alex Orji ready to step into Michigan QB1 spot

The departure of the legendary J.J. McCarthy was always going to be a big blow for the Michigan Wolverines. but junior quarterback Alex Orji had a stellar performance in the spring game. rushing for a touchdown while completing 13 of 18 passes for 103 yards. putting himself as a candidate.

While speaking to reporters after the camp, he expressed his confidence in himself to step into the breach or assist whoever did.

“We had a leader in our room (in J.J. McCarthy), who was the best leader of the nation, in my opinion. Whenever it happens, it happens and everyone can kind of feel it. But at the end of the day, it’s time to step up, and the time is now," Orji said.
“If I’m not the starter going into Week 1, I want to know whatever I can do to help the team, and if helping the team is me being the starter, then I want to work to be that. So, obviously, I would love for that to be the new starter. What I’m gonna work to do is be the starter, because in my head, I have confidence that gotta give us a great opportunity.”

It is not unusual for elite college football teams to go into Week 1 with no clear frontrunner for QB1, and as such, all the candidates will feel like they have a shot at bagging the spot.
