The Texas Longhorns running back depth chart is in chaos after true freshman Christian Clark suffered a serious lower leg injury. According to Anwar Richardson, it's not believed to be an ACL but is a serious injury.
Clark was expected to have a big role with the Longhorns. The news also comes after Texas lost starting running back CJ Baxter to a season-ending knee surgery.
After two major injuries to the Longhorns' running back room, coach Steve Sarkisian will have a much different-looking depth chart.
Coach Steve Sarkisian’s Texas RB Depth Chart
#1. Jaydon Blue
After the injury to CJ Baxter, Jaydon Blue will likely be the team's starting running back.
Blue is entering his third season at Texas and last season, he rushed for 398 yards on 65 carries and three touchdowns. He also added 135 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.
Blue will now be expected to carry the load after he was supposed to be part of the 1-2 punch with Baxter.
#2. Tre Wisner
Tre Wisner is expected to be the backup running back for Steve Sarkisian and Texas.
Wisner is entering his sophomore season, as last year he rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.
Wisner was a three-star recruit in the class of 2023.
#3. Jerrick Gibson
The third-string running back for Texas after the injuries is true freshman Jerrick Gibson. Gibson was a four-star recruit in the class of 2024 and was the third-ranked running back in the class.
Sarkisian has been impressed with Gibson so far in camp as a true freshman.
"They're definitely further down the road than maybe some would think," Sarkisian said via 247Sports. "We've definitely been impressed with them."
Gibson had offers from Texas A&M, Colorado, Miami, Tennessee, Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina, among others.
The final two options for Texas are unique.
Nik Sanders played baseball for the Longhorns but joined Texas' football team. He played running back in high school and could be practicing as a running back for the football team to add some depth to the room.
Finally, linebacker Derion Gullette is receiving practice reps at running back despite never playing the position before. Gullette played wide receiver and linebacker in high school but looks to be transitioning to running back in his second season at Texas.
