The first round of the 12-team College Football Playoff is officially concluded and we now know what the quarterfinals are going to look like. This is going to be four of the New Year's Six Bowl games as well and get us one step closer to crowning a national champion. Let's take a closer look at the matchups and discuss how these teams have gotten here.
College Football Playoff Quarterfinal Matchups
Boise State Broncos vs. Penn State Nittany Lions
The third-seeded Boise State Broncos will face the sixth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The Nittany Lions dominated in their first-round matchup with a 38-10 home win over the SMU Mustangs. The Broncos were the Mountain West Champions and had a bye in the first round of the CFP.
It is going to be interesting to see how the Nittany Lions look to slow down Heisman Trophy runner-up running back Ashton Jeanty.
Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Texas Longhorns
The Peach Bowl will be one of three bowl games on New Year's Day and will be taking place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The fifth-seeded Texas Longhorns take on the fourth-seeded Arizona State Sun Devils in this game.
This game will be the return to where the Longhorns lost the SEC Championship Game a couple of weeks ago but now have a chance to showcase how Quinn Ewers is able to step up. With running back Cam Skattebo for the Sun Devils, the Longhorns are going to have their hands full.
Oregon Ducks vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
In a rematch of their regular season classic, the eighth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes are heading to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, to take on the top-seeded Oregon Ducks, after beating the Tennessee Volunteers 42-17. When these two teams met earlier this year, the Ducks were able to secure a 32-31 home win as Will Howard could not spike the ball quick enough to give the Buckeyes a chance at a game-winning field goal attempt.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Georgia Bulldogs
The final quarterfinals matchup will pit the seventh-seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the second-seeded Georgia Bulldogs. The Fighting Irish dominated with a 27-17 win in the first round over the Indiana Hoosiers while the Bulldogs had a bye due to winning the SEC.
With the recent news surrounding Georgia quarterback Carson Beck likely not playing due to an injured elbow, it will be interesting to see Gunner Stockton in the CFP Quarterfinals.
